Sandplay is a therapeutic process played out in a box or tray of sand. In the “free and protected space” of the tray you can create what ever you want in the sand. On the wall, near the tray, are shelves of miniatures that may call or draw into this thoughtful space. Stories unfold in the tray as the sand mixes with the miniatures. Adding water to a scene may bring you deeper into your play until a releasing of emotions, that may not be reachable with words, are often felt and then expressed.
The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct acting from inner necessity. The creative mind plays with the objects it loves

SANDPLAY

Sandplay is an ancient therapy still utilized throughout the world. Native American, Asian and East Indian cultures have created sand script and sandpainting to evoke healing for many generations. Sandplay is similar. Working with the miniatures in the sand (wet or dry) becomes a therapeutic outlet for your healing. Usually, but not always, working in the sand is a silent process. You may be engaged in a thought, and/or a reverie, as the miniatures speak to you and then, when engaged in the play, something shifts, something becomes clearer, and often something is experienced as coming together.

In therapy, to have a witness to your process adds a dimension of healing to your play. Your sand tray is individual to you and no two trays are ever alike. We may, but not always, discuss your tray afterwards and explore what feelings you had or what thoughts emerged during your play. Sandplay is a therapeutic tool that typically moves you to want to engage in play and is one that can facilitate a deeper understanding of yourself.
